Sakai op Holland Open conferentie

Op 18 september gaf Jaeques Koeman een presentatie over Sakai. De presentatie geeft een introductie Sakai en voorbeelden vanuit de use case van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Daarnaast wordt de Nederlandse community geintroduceerd en worden er enkele ontwikkelingen geschetst.

Paris, Hull and Amsterdam collaborating on Sakai and Uportal

Last week several developers from the University of Hull, l'université Pierre et Marie Curie and the University of Amsterdam met in Amsterdam. We discussed our present and future plans with Sakai and Uportal and shared experiences and practices. During the two day meeting several ideas on possible collaboration were discussed. We decided to work together on some small projects on  extending Uportal functionality and Uportal - Sakai integration. If we succeed in making these little projects a success it could be the start of something really nice. We hope to show the Uportal and Sakai community the progress of this collaboration in progress in next year conferences.

Sakai op Educause (Orlando)

Op de komende Educause conferentie in Orlando zijn er veel sessies en evenementen die gerelateerd zijn aan Sakai en open source in het algemeen. Zoals altijd gaat er een grote groep Nederlanders naar de Educause conferentie via de zogenaamde Edutrip, die altijd zeer zorgvuldig georganiseerd wordt door SURFfoundation.
Voor die mensen is dit overzicht wellicht handig om af te drukken en mee te nemen.

Sakai 2.5.3 is beschikbaar

Vorige week is heeft de nieuwste versie van Sakai, Sakai 2.5.3 het licht gezien. Op de downloadpagina van Sakai is een overzicht van alle verschillende downloads te vinden. Een overzicht van de wijzigingen in deze release wordt op de Sakai wiki beschreven.

De 2.5 releases van Sakai zijn opgedragen aan Marc Brierley. Marc was één van actieve gangmakers in de Sakai community en is begin dit jaar plotseling overleden.

Stoas gebruikt Sakai voor eigen bedrijfsvoering

Stoas Learning heeft onlangs een Sakai installatie in gebruik genomen ter ondersteuning van de eigen communicatieprocessen. De basisinrichting werd gedaan door Leen van Kaam. Met name bij de consultants - die veelal buiten de deur zijn - bestond de behoefte aan een ruimte waar men informatie met elkaar kan delen en waar men op een laagdrempelige manier kan communiceren. Deze zogenaamde Share omgeving is vooralsnog gericht op de communicatie binnen het team consultants. Op termijn wordt eraan gedacht om specifieke projectsites in te richten, waar de de klant eventueel ook toegang toe krijgt. Op deze wijze hopen we dat de Sakai omgeving straks ook zal bijdragen aan de externe communicatie.

Sakai op Holland Open

Donderdag 18 september (morgen) zal Jaeques Koeman (Edia) op de Holland Open Conferentie (website: http://www.hosc.nl/) een sessie verzorgen over Sakai. Op de conferentie zijn naast de sessie over Sakai sessies over Moodle en ook gebruik van openstandaarden en open source in het Onderwijs. Er is een specifiek track beide dagen over "Open Educatie".

Vernieuwde Sakai website online

www.sakaiproject.org,  de website van de Sakai Foundation is vernieuwd. Een nieuwe vormgeving en veel leuker een nieuwe software omgeving waarin de website is gebouwd.
Geen willekeurig cms maar Sakai als motor onder de eigen website.

Gezocht: QA director

De Sakai Foundation heeft heel weinig personeel in dienst. Eén van de belangrijkste functies is die van Quality Assurance Director. Hier worden kandidaten voor gezocht. Zie LinkedIn: Quality Assurance Director at Sakai Foundation

Sakai 3.0 is ook gepland: juni 2009

Vorige week berichtten we reeds over de eerstvolgende release van Sakai, te weten Sakai 2.6. Inmiddels is er ook meer informatie over het vervolg. Er wordt al ernstig nagedacht over Sakai 3.0. Of eigenlijk: Sakai 3.0 zal min of meer in parallel met Sakai 2.6 worden ontwikkeld.
En Sakai 3.0 wordt echt innovatief! De basis van Sakai, de zogenaamde kernel, zal helemaal herschreven worden. En verder wordt de gebruikerskant van de applicatie behoorlijk vernieuwd, waarbij het wijzigen simpeler zal worden ('edit in place'). En verder wordt er nagedacht om meer social networking functionaliteiten te incorporeren.
Zie de wiki voor meer informatie (en lees ook dat er nog geen garanties voor opleveringstermijnen worden gegeven; er wordt nog druk gezocht naar mensen die willen meewerken).

Sakai 2.6 komt in februari 2009

Binnen de Sakai community is enige tijd geleden besloten om het iets rustiger aan te doen met het uitbrengen van nieuwe versies. De eerstvolgende versie van Sakai, versie 2.6, is nu gepland om in februari 2009 opgeleverd te worden.
Op de wiki van de Sakai Foundation (ook wel "confluence" genoemd) vindt je het hele tijdsschema. Dit loopt van een zogenaamde 'feature freeze' (op 31 augustus aanstaande) tot de release op 2 februari 2009. Lees alles op

Sakai SIG verslag

Op 26 juni j.l. werd er in het Portfolio4u kantoor te Amsterdam weer een Sakai NL SIG bijeenkomst gehouden. Het verslag daarvan kun je vinden op Google Docs door hier te klikken.
In september zal een nieuwe Sakai SIG bijeenkomst worden aangekondigd.

Blackboard en Sakai: toch samen door één deur?

De UT heeft gekozen voor Blackboard als nieuwe Elektronische Leeromgeving, zo kan op de officiële website gelezen worden. Sakai zou niet meer in beeld zijn. Maar voor universiteiten die niet kunnen of willen kiezen tussen Sakai, Moodle en/of Blackboard, is er interessant nieuws. Er is een BlackBoard Sakai connector in de maak, en ook wordt er gesproken over een BlackBoard Moodle connector.
Blackboard heeft onlangs dit belangrijke nieuws aangekondigd: ze werken samen met Syracuse University aan de Blackboard Sakai Connector (zie hier, hier of zoek met google). Charles Severance (Dr. Chuck), de voormalige Executive Director van de Sakai Foundation, heeft een uitgebalanceerde analyse geschreven van de waarde van deze ontwikkeling. Dit is zijn standpunt:

When I look at all of this, the balance tips towards being engaged in the effort and trying to influence the direction to ultimately improve the experience of teachers and learners regardless of what enterprise CMS system their school or campus happens to have installed.

Een leerlijn op de Sakai Conferentie Parijs 1-3 juli 2008

In mijn werk als Stoas consultant ben ik bezig met de vraag ‘Hoe kunnen we docenten ondersteunen met effectieve e-learning methodieken?’ Zo’n e-learning methodiek is in mijn ideale voorstelling een ‘best practice’ vertaald naar een van de inhoud onafhankelijke template. Een dergelijke template biedt een opeenvolgend gespecificeerd gebruik van allerlei e-learning tools en f2f activiteiten, waarbij de variabelen de inhoud van het leerproces of vakgebied zijn. Ik deel dit ideaal met James Dalziel, een van de ontwerpers achter LAMS. Hij hield op de Sakai Conferentie in Parijs een inspirerende keynote hierover: ‘Sharing good pedagogy: the promise of learning design’. Hierin vertelde hij hoe hij dergelijke templates ontwikkelt en hoe hij ze via LAMS vervolgens als template zou willen delen met anderen. De aanpak, waarbij een docent een template kan aanroepen voor een onderzoeksmethode, een rollenspel of probleemgestuurd leren en dan een opeenvolging van tools ( en resources) in de leeromgeving krijgt aangeboden, waarin hij alleen de variabelen nog maar met content hoeft te vullen, trekt me bijzonder aan. Wanneer zo’n opeenvolging van (e-)activiteiten een volstrekt lineair proces is, zonder keuzevrijheid voor de lerende, gaat een dergelijke aanpak me te ver. James Dalziel vertelde op de conferentie dat de lineaire presentatie van LAMS inmiddels doorbroken wordt door de mogelijkheid om vertakkingen aan te brengen in het learning design binnen LAMS( Learning Activity management system). Ook Diana Laurillard ging in haar keynote ‘ A conversational framework for the effective use of learning technology’ in op het belang van templates van opeenvolgende leeractiviteiten zoals in LAMS mogelijk zijn.

Sakai is niet sterk in het aanbieden van een opeenvolging van leeractiviteiten in verschillende tools. Gebruikt iemand in Sakai bijvoorbeeld de resources tool voor het aanbieden van content, dan moet men voor deelname in een forumdiscussie naar een andere tool. Natuurlijk is het mogelijk LAMS te integreren in Sakai om een dergelijke opeenvolging te creëren, maar dan wordt er niet gewerkt met de tools van Sakai maar met de tools van LAMS. Eigenlijk zou een dergelijke opeenvolging met de tools van Sakai gerealiseerd moeten worden en niet met de tools van LAMS. En hoewel er in het verleden erover gesproken is om LAMS geïntegreerd te laten werken met de tools van Sakai, is er hiermee in praktijk nooit iets gedaan.
Ik ben daarom op zoek gegaan naar methodieken om het probleem van de opeenvolging van leeractiviteiten m.b.v. Sakai-tools op te lossen. Ik heb de volgende (deel) oplossingen gezien:

• De Melete content builder kan in versie 2.5 verschillende bronnen uit de Sakai Resources tool binnen een Melete leereenheid benaderen. Echter andere tools linken is moeizaam. Voor de Katana tool geldt hetzelfde (De Katana-tool is een versie van de Melete content builder aangevuld met Digital Resource Management).
  


• Sousa zou een nieuwe tool moeten worden in Sakai, die op dit moment al resources kan linken, en in de toekomst ook leeractiviteiten binnen andere Sakai tools zou kunnen opnemen in een opeenvolging. Mark Norton hield hierover een sessie ‘Sousa workshop’. Sousa is nog niet beschikbaar voor Sakai 2.5.
  


• Het Open Syllabus Project biedt mogelijkheden om resources en ‘assignments’ vanuit de syllabus in een opeenvolging te plaatsen. Het is de bedoeling om in de toekomst ook andere tools te kunnen linken vanuit de syllabus.
  


• Individuele gebruikers gebruiken een HTML file uit Ressources via de Web content tool om daarin een opeenvolging van resources en tools aan te bieden. Helaas is het vinden van de toollink nog moeizaam. Dezelfde aanpak kon ook uitgaande van de bestaande Syllabus tool gevolgd worden.
  


• Sommigen gebruiken voor het klaarzetten van de leerpaden de wiki tool. Maar over het algemeen wordt deze voor docenten nog te gebruikersonvriendelijk geacht. In
  2.6 zou de wiki tool veel gebruikersvriendelijker moeten worden.
  


• Chuck Severance vertelde in zijn presentatie ‘Functionality Mashup’ , dat men een oplossing zoekt om in Sakai cursussen Moodle of Blackboard tools aan te roepen en andersom. De links naar of binnen de tools van Sakai worden hiervoor vereenvoudigd. Misschien is dat een aanknopingspunt kunnen zijn om opeenvolgingen binnen verschillende tools makkelijker te kunnen samenstellen.
  

Ook al is de ultieme tool om verschillende leeractiviteiten in een opeenvolging aan te bieden, dan nog niet in Sakai aanwezig, de verschuiving van de nadruk van tools en techniek naar leren en didactiek op de conferentie biedt hoop, dat het met die tool alleen maar een kwestie van tijd is.

European BOF, a short wrap up

On Tuesday morning (july 1st) participants from several European countries talked about two issues:

• Should we organise a Sakai regional conference (and where) ?
• What are important development issues from an european perspective?

It was quickly decided that we should have a european regional conference. The main aim of this conference should be to "spread the news". Invite newcomers and show them the potential that Sakai has as an elearning and collaboration platform. A second argument for a regional conference is the fact that universities and schools could sent more people to a local conference to exchange ideas and practices then to a place couple of thousend miles away.

The second part of the meeting we talked about different development issues that are important from a european perspective. Localisation and translation are high on that list. A very good suggestion came from our friends from Stockholm. At this moment we lack the funds and time to coordinate ethe different european efforts that are being made regarding to localisation and translation of Sakai into the different european languages. To tackle this we are going to write an proposal for the regional conference next year in which we will ask the different european sakai partners and interested universities & schools to subsidies a person to take on this task.

Last but not least we agreed that we should bring the european discussion group on confluence back to the living.

Sakai Fellows

This morning Michael Korcuska opened the 9th Sakai conference in Paris.
In his opening remarks he officially named the 2008 Sakai Fellows.
The University of Amsterdam is honoured that our own Alan Berg is elected as one of the 2008 Fellows. His work on automated code review and contribution to the QA process of Sakai didn't passed unnoticed. During the speech Alan got his Fellow jacket and his now one of "the happy few man in black" in de Sakai Foundation

Frankrijk wint (open source kampioen van Europa)

Een mooi artikel over de stand van zaken met betrekking tot open source in 16 landen in Europa is te vinden op de website van de 451Group. 451Group is een onderzoeksbedrijf met betrekking tot software en de IT industrie. Dit bedrijf is misschien nog niet zo bekend als Forrester of Gartner, maar dit artikel (en de rest van het weblog) is zeker het lezen waard. Zie 451 CAOS Theory » Open source champions of Europe

I’ve spent the past three weeks profiling open source policies and adoption projects at the 16 nations competing in EURO 2008. Congratulations are due to Spain, which deservedly won the football championship on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Germany.

Just for fun I thought I’d also declare a 2008 Tour of Europe Open Source Champion. In deciding the winner I decided to follow the same organizational structure as the football, so read on to find out which eight nations made it out of the group stages and how I whittled it down to an eventual champion.

Er verscheen onlangs nog meer over Frankrijk en open source (waarbij Frankrijk een ruime overwinning boekt op Italië!). Het is een goede keuze geweest om de huidige Sakai conferentie in Parijs te organiseren!

Vandaag was er weer een Sakai NL bijeenkomst. Het was zoals altijd weer bijzonder informatief, met ook nu weer nieuwe (en ook bekende!) gezichten aan de vergadertafel.
We kwamen vandaag in Amsterdam onder andere te spreken over de opkomst van open source, of in goed Nederland 'vrije software'. De meeste aanwezigen vonden dat het thema steeds meer wordt besproken en ook serieus wordt genomen.
Tom Kuipers van de Universiteit van Amsterdam had het bewijs meegenomen: een artikel in het gratis dagblad "Dag". Een verslag van de bijeenkomst volgt binnenkort.

Presentaties bij de VU

Rob van Leeuwen van het Onderwijscentrum van de Vrije Universiteit (VU) had ondergetekende en Frank Benneker vandaag uitgenodigd om iets te komen vertellen over Sakai voor hem en zijn collega's van de VU. Zo zaten we dus vanochtend rond 10.00 uur in een zaaltje met een tiental collega's van de Vrije Universiteit.

Ik heb een een algemene presentatie (zie hierboven) gegeven over Sakai: over het Sakai Project, de community, en wie er in Nederland met Sakai bezig is. Maar vooral ben ik ingegaan op de huidige status van Sakai, dat nog maar goed vier jaar bestaat. Die huidige status zou ik willen omschrijven als een volwassen produkt met een serieuze samenwerkingsstructuur erom heen (de community), gefaciliteerd door de Sakai Foundation en haar medewerkers.

Frank ging in zijn presentatie (zie hierboven) in op de manieren waarop de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) Sakai inzet en op de beweegredenen om Sakai in te zetten bij de Uva.
Ik geloof dat we de aanwezigen van veel nieuwe informatie hebben voorzien, waar ze zeer content mee waren.
Nog een laatste opmerking: de presentatie van mij staat bij www.scribd.com. De presentatie van Frank heb ik bij www.slideshare.net geplaatst (mijn presentatie wilde daar niet converteren). Bij beide sites kun je ook, indien gewenst, een Powerpoint versie van de presentaties downloaden.

Sakai Fellows zijn bekend!

De Sakai Foundation 'beloond' op (on)regelmatige tijden mensen uit de Sakai community, die veel goed werk hebben verricht. Zij worden benoemd tot Sakai Fellows en krijgen een geldbedrag. Gisteren zag ik de nieuwe namen op het weblog van Michael Korcuska, die de Executive Director van de Sakai Foundation is (dat weblog is trouwens een aanrader!).

Volgende bijeenkomst: 26 juni 2008

Jan van den Berge heeft het initiatief genomen (chapeau!) om een nieuwe Sakai bijeenkomst te organiseren. Deze zal plaatsvinden op donderdag 26 juni aanstaande in Amsterdam bij Portfolio4u bv. Diegenen die in het verleden één of meerdere keren een bijeenkomst hebben bezocht, hebben per email reeds bericht gehad over deze bijeenkomst. Aan de agenda voor de bijeenkomst wordt nog gewerkt.
Mocht je geen bericht hebben gehad, om wat voor reden dan ook, dan wordt je hierbij uitgenodigd! Onze bijeenkomsten zijn niet geheim en kosten niets (behalve je tijdsinvestering) en zijn voor iedereen toegankelijk.
Je kunt je aanwezigheid bevestigen door een email te sturen naar support[at]portfolio4u.nl. Je krijgt dan zo spoedig mogelijk bericht van inschrijving, het definitieve programma en een routebeschrijving. Vergeet niet te vermelden of je gebruik wenst te maken van de lunch voorafgaand aan de bijeenkomst.
Als je iets wilt vertellen over je ervaringen met Sakai (en dus wat meer tijd op de agenda zou willen hebben), dan kun je dat ook melden.

De gebruiker op de eerste plaats!

In de laatste weken zijn er veel interessante zaken gebeurd in de Sakai community. Ze kunnen heel duidelijk onder de noemer 'de gebruiker is koning' worden gerubriceerd. Al eerder besteedden we hier aandacht aan My Sakai. Dit zorgt er voor dat de gebruiker in iGoogle of in de Windows Vista sidebar de belangrijkste nieuwtjes uit Sakai op een presenteerblaadje krijgt aangereikt (natuurlijk helemaal in te stellen hoe en wat).
Verder zijn er in het Fluid project belangrijke stappen gezet om in de gebruikersinterface van Sakai sterke verbeteringen door te voeren. Ze hebben recent Fluid Infusion in beta gelanceerd. Hierin zitten een aantal herbruikbare elementen ('components'), die programmeurs kunnen gebruiken om een betere gebruikservaring te realiseren.
Nate Angell, werkzaam bij de rSmart Group, heeft een bericht op zijn website staan over de toekomst zoals hij die ziet voor Sakai (en andere ELO's). Zie Where is Sakai headed? or, I want my user-centered mash-up with extra gravy!

Sakai ED Michael Korcuska asked Severance the obvious question: Will Sakai or other learning environments disappear in the individualized, distributed world he described? I found myself agreeing with Severance's answer that Sakai or other online learning systems will not disappear. Institutions will continue to want and need an environment where they supply and control some of or even most of the user experience.

Bijeenkomst Sakai SIG

Op 9 april was er weer een bijeenkomst van de Nederlandse Sakai Special Interest Group. De Bijeenkomst werd gehouden op de inspirerende nieuwe lokatie van het Informatiseringscentrum van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Vertegenwoordigers uit het (hoger) onderwijs en uit verschillende bedrijven waren aanwezig op de bijeenkomst, waar onder meer werd gesproken over de aankomende Sakai conferentie in Parijs, de toekomst van de SIG en de ontwikkelingen bij de deelnemende organisaties. Ook was er een presentatie van de Sakai-site www.conflictstudies.nl . Het complete verslag van de bijeenkomst is hier te lezen.

Moodlemoot in Antwerpen

Er zit een volgende Moodlemoot bijeenkomst aan te komen, op 28 mei 2008 in Antwerpen. Een Moodlemoot is een (regionale) bijeenkomst voor gebruikers van Moodle. Moodle is één van meest gebruikte open source elektronische leeromgevingen.
De organisatie van de dag is in handen van Ned-Moove, de Nederlandstalige Moodle vereniging. Voor 25 euro (als je lid bent van Ned-Moove) of 50 euro ben je in één dag geheel op de hoogte van Moodle in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Het belooft een heel mooi programma te worden. Er is ook een hele track die gericht zal zijn op andere open source projecten die ook in het onderwijs hun waarde hebben (of zouden kunnen hebben).
Mocht je meer willen weten over Moodle, dan is dit je kans om relatief dicht bij huis veel te weten te komen en nieuwe mensen te leren kennen. Ik twijfel nog of ik ga; kans is groter dan 50%.

TU Delft in bestuur OCW Consortium

Het OCW Consortium is het wereldwijde samenwerkingsverband van universiteiten, die open courseware beschikbaar stellen (oftewel vrij beschikbaar cursusmateriaal). TU Delft loopt in Nederland voorop op dit gebied, samen met de Open Universiteit. Heden is Anka Mulder van de TU Delft gekozen in het bestuur van het OCW Consortium, zo meldt Willem van Valkenburg vanuit China.
Ik vraag mij af: wie is het volgende lid vanuit Nederland van het OCW Consortium?

[Dutch] Bijeenkomst bij SURFfoundation

Zoals we vorige week al gemeld hadden, hebben Frank Benneker en ondergetekende eerder deze week gesproken met SURFfoundation. En wel met beide platformmanagers, Tom Dousma (Onderwijs) en Wouter de Haan (Organisatie). Het was een prettig en constructief gesprek. Dit zijn de highlights:

• We constateren dat er, behalve de UvA, geen andere serieus gebruik is van Sakai in het Hoger Onderwijs. Bij Saxion Hogescholen en de Hotelschool Den Haag worden pilots uitgevoerd. Dit is een magere basis voor een special interest group.
• Bestuurders in het HO maken in het algemeen 'veilige' keuzes en dan ligt Sakai niet voor de hand. Dat Sakai veel meer dan een produkt is, is een moeilijke boodschap, ook bij bestuurders in het HO.
• Het lijkt er op dit moment op dat instellingen in het HO vooral achter elkaar aan lopen om een keuze te maken voor MS SharePoint. Overigens constateren we dat Nederland hier duidelijk uit de pas loopt, vergeleken met andere landen. Daar speelt MS SharePoint als leeromgeving hoegenaamd geen rol. Dit alles lijkt sterk op het proces, jaren geleden, dat leidde tot de vrij massale keuze voor Blackboard.
• Er loopt op dit moment een scenariostudie binnen SURFfoundation, ter voorbereiding op de SURF Onderwijsdagen. We schatten in dat in één van de scenario's die daar uit gaat komen, ongetwijfeld 'open source, open standaarden' als thema van belang zal zijn. Op zo'n moment is het wellicht handig om de Sakai SIG NL weer nieuw leven in te blazen.
• Overigens blijft het belangrijk om 'awareness' te blijven kweken. Er zijn nog steeds vele misvattingen over open source, open standaarden, of Sakai (of Moodle) in het bijzonder.

Gegeven voorgaande, mogen de conclusies duidelijk zijn:
1/ De Sakai SIG NL gaat in slaapstand. Mogelijk na publicatie scenariostudie weer opnieuw bekijken.
2/ We gaan door als gebruikersgroep.
3/ SURFfoundation is bereid om faciliteiten beschikbaar te stellen voor de gebruikersgroep, indien gewenst. We zouden bijvoorbeeld gebruik kunnen maken van de nieuwe onderwijsportal, (www.surfspace.nl).

[Dutch] Samenvatting web-enquête

Veertien (14) personen hadden de moeite genomen om de enquête in te vullen. Je kunt zelf de complete resultaten hier inzien. Hierbij de belangrijkste conclusies:

1. Een grote meerderheid, 11 van de 14 respondenten, twijfelen niet aan het bestaansrecht van de Sakai SIG NL ("Ja, zeker weten!").
2. Er maakt niemand bezwaar tegen het feit dat er ook bedrijven meedoen in de club.
3. Men opteert voor het houden van enkele bijeenkomsten per jaar.
4. Enkele keren wordt er de behoefte aan een Nederlandstalige website benoemd.
5. Uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring wordt als belangrijkste doel van de gebruikersgroep benoemd.

This weblog will get more content in the Dutch language

This weblog has been slightly redefined. The most visible change will be that we will be producing more content in the Dutch language from now on. The reason for this is simple: the English language is still a barrier for some people. And even more important: we really want to bring more news oriented to our Dutch audience, so why not write this then in the Dutch language!

[Dutch] Sakai 2.5.0 is beschikbaar!

Na een lange en intensieve testperiode is deze week Sakai 2.5.0 beschikbaar gekomen. Er zijn vele vernieuwingen en verbeteringen in deze versie aanwezig. Alle details (in het Engels) vind je in op de Sakai 2.5.0 Release Page . Er zijn verbeteringen in het Gradebook (cijferadministratie), de Assignments (opdrachten), Portfolio en de Test & Quizzes tool (toetsomgeving). De lijst met beschikbare vertalingen is ook uitgebreid. Je kunt Sakai gebruiken in het Arabisch, Koreaans, Portugees, Zweeds en nog meer talen, waaronder natuurlijk ook Nederlands.

Yesterday we had a great crowd at our presentation on Sakai, during the Innovatium 2008 conference in Rotterdam. We only had 45 minutes to tell the peopele "Everything you need to know about Sakai". We gave a general introduction on Sakai, Sakai in The Netherlands and we shared some thoughts on open source (or community source in general). Jan (pictured here) demonstrated some of the features of Sakai.
Our time was very limited, but as far as we are concerned, it was a succesful session (click for the presentation, in Dutch)!

Now is the time to seriously consider Sakai!

As news about the 'win' of Blackboard over Desire2Learn pours in, the Sakai Foundation also released an official statement. Michael Korcuska writes:
"This is certainly not (..) the most important part of the ongoing patent dispute. Completely separate from the Bb-D2L lawsuit, the US Patent Office will be re-examining the validity of Blackboard’s patent. The Sakai Foundation has always believed this re-examination will be the critical activity in ensuring the patent does not have a continued deleterious affect on innovation and openness in the community. (..)
This jury verdict is not a judgment that Blackboard holds a valid patent. It is an initial verdict that D2L infringed on the Blackboard patent. As such, the verdict is not that surprising. The Sakai Foundation continues to believe that the Blackboard patent should not have been awarded in the first place. (..)
Ultimately, we believe strong participation in a community-driven effort like Sakai is the best way to control your own destiny."

New Commercial Affiliate for Sakai Foundation

There is a new commercial affiliate for the Sakai Foundation, namely Campus EAI. From the press release at sakaiproject.org:

"We have proven the viability and affordability of Sakai to small and midsize institutions who are struggling to provide a feature-rich and robust eLearning solution with limited resources and strapped budgets," said Anjli Jain, Executive Director of CEAI. This is really cool! Really!!!

In the last couple of days I saw some emails coming by about My Sakai. This is something very cool that our colleagues have created in Cambridge.
What is My Sakai? It is a piece of software that makes it possible to view important information from your Sakai installation in Facebook, iGoogle, Google Desktop, Mac DashBoard, an RSS reader and the Vista Sidebar, so that you don't have to go into Sakai to see the newest Resources or Announcements.
Although it is still beta software (it is a so-called Contrib tool), it sounds very promising to me. Check out the Confluence space for more information.

First of all I would like to extend my best wishes for the New Year to everyone within the Sakai community that I have met in the last 3 years. I am writing this blog post to let you know some exciting news (at least for me)!
First of all: I am not employed anymore at the University of Twente as of Jan 1, 2008. I have started my own elearning consulting business. Please update your adressbook with the details as mentioned below.
More importantly: I am still a big fan of Sakai, and will keep working within and for the Sakai community as much as I can. As a matter of fact, I am right now working with Portfolio4u on some exciting projects. Sakai is serious about internationalization

Within the Sakai community, everyone does tremendous work. Some of us work hard on the code of Sakai, others on quality, others on clear requirements and there is a group working on the user experience (done trhough the Fluid project). Today I want to highlight another important aspect of the Sakai community. This is the group of people that work hard on Sakai for the users in non-English speaking countries. This is the Internationalization Working Group, where Beth Kirschner is the coordinator.
This group not only deals with pure translation of everthing that's inside Sakai. No, they really do "Internationalization", which means that Sakai will also adhere to conventions in other countries. Just to name one issue within this realm: date and time formatting. Over here in Europe we don't use the AM and PM convention. We have 24 hours in one day!
If you want to know what's being worked on, please go to Known I18N problems - WG: I18N & L10N - Confluence, where you will find the Top Internationalization Problems. There is also a Internationalization dashboard (hosted in Amsterdam), that shows you how many files have been internationalized so far. There is also a page with current information on the Dutch translation. Still some work to be done! Good to know: LOI, Portfolio4u, Edia and A New Spring have joined forces to get things done. These are all commercial companies working with Sakai in The Netherlands.

ccLearn: very promising ideas!

ccLearn was 'publicly' launched during the Sakai conference in Amsterdam in June of this year (picture of Hal Abelson). ccLearn has made some interesting progress. ccLearn is partnering with Google to create a so-called "Web-scale open education search". Please check it out at:

Institutions have done amazing work creating and publishing OERs on the web, but the infrastructure to fully realize the value of these investments is still at the Web 1.0 level. Web-scale open education search is a component of taking the OER ecosystem to the next level, as well as a driver for interoperability and standards across OER implementations. (..) the goal is to increase the visibility and traffic to all specialized
OER repositories. There will always be a need for repositories that
focus on specific subsets of OER or allow for interaction with OER in
specialized ways. Our belief is that web-scale search will enable a
quantum leap in the awareness and utilization of OER by directing
interested users to existing sites more successfully.

De afgelopen week (van 4 tot en met 6 december) werd in de Amerikaanse stad Newport Beach de '8th Sakai Conference' gehouden, een conferentie over de open source digitale leeromgeving Sakai. Een van de deelnemers was Alan Berg, senior developer en 'fulltime probleemoplosser' binnen de Onderwijs- & Onderzoek Dienstengroep (ODG) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). In onderstaand artikel beschrijft hij de aard van Sakai, de relatie tussen Sakai en de UvA en houdt hij een rondgang langs een aantal betrokkenen.

Apples & pears

The keynote of day two by Bob Sutor, VP of open source and standards at IBM was partly about something very familiar to Dutch innovators in Higher Education. Sutor spoke about something that has also been coined 'Generation Einstein' in the Netherlands. A new generation of learners entering the schools with a lot of computer skills and therefore more technological demands. But his talk 'from closed to open' was also about the role of open software in this development. Reasoning from the deception that the new generation faces when confronted with 'boring' educational software, open source developments in conjuction with the 'read/write' web 2.0 offer a possibility to start creating better educational systems that meet the demands of the new learners.

UC Berkely showed some of this in practise as they demonstrated their 'OpenCast' initiative. In collaboration with Apple they work on an architecture for producing, sharing and delivering webcasts in education. And it integrates with Youtube too, speaking about new demands. All together a far from trivial and challenging combination of technology, didactic concepts, new (open) business logic and so forth.
Like the OpenCast project, a general observation is that there are many professional and well-structured developments going on, that are either built in Sakai or integrated with it. Just take Sakai as given and you can put energy in shaping the environment to your philosophy of education.

I will be representing the Dutch Sakai SIG in the panel session “Sakai in your backyard' about organizing regional Sakai events. And it actually feels a bit like the backyard when I have to mention that in the Netherlands we are still busy comparing apples with pears in the backyard, whereas we should be reasoning about what kind of neat features and innovations we could develop within the community! Take Sakai as given, and direct the resources to make Sakai match optimally to your philosophy of education. Sometimes i think this is what it's all about: either you model the software to your organisation (open source) or you model your organisation to the software you have (closed source).

Next up for today is the technical demo of the Sign-up tool that Porfolio4U and Edia developed in the last month. A hot item because it turned out to be a classic case of concurrent development. Yale university, Stanford university and University of Michigan have or have had Sign-up projects. So what will happen? Can we agree to synchronize requirements and come up with one tool, or will there be different sign-up tools in the future? Think of it, there are in fact a lot of use cases for a sign-up tool, ranging from student meetings, tutoring sessions or even seminars and workshops.
Does anybody know a good alternative name for a tool that allows people to sign up for events such as seminars, workshops and the like?

Connexions and Sakai?

Through the photostream of Magnus (Stockholm University) I found this piece of great news: the Connexions project (at Rice University) is looking at the Sakai community (and Foundation). That would be good news if these two movements came together in the near future!
There is more stuff coming from Sweden! This is a weblog that I recently discovered: the Swedish Learning Space.

Day One in Newport Beach

Today the main Sakai conference started in Newport Beach, about 55 miles south of Los Angeles. The hotel and surroundings (picture taken from the hotel) provide an excellent environment for the coming days. I have been told that 411 people have registered for the conference, and I have counted three Dutchmen among them.

So what was on this morning? The day started off with an inspiring key note talk by Joel Thierstein, Executive Director of Connexions and Associate Provost of Rice University. The Connexions platform is definitely worth some further investigation. From a conceptual point of view, one could compare it with Dutch activities within the ‘educatieve contentketen’. Like in the Netherlands , (business)models of open content, re-use and sharing within a community are new, and therefore also require new and challenging forms of governance and leadership within such communities.

In another session, 'converting from an existing course management system to Sakai' by David Melone, I heard some interesting remarks on integrating Sakai with an existing Question Mark Perception instance. I turns out that they are interested in sharing an LDAP between the two systems and possibly report QMP grades to the Sakai gradebook. Since the University of Amsterdam now uses a QMP instance for their ICTO - Digital testing programme, I think it might be something to keep on our radar.

The Sakai Foundation executive director Micheal Korcuska gave an update on the Sakai Foundation in the third session. It seems that there has been a good debate within the foundation about the mission statement of Sakai and the priorities of the Sakai Foundation. The mission could be ‘Beat Blackboard’ , but Michael came up with a few more thoughtful statements:

· Create flexibility for education
· Facilitate innovation
· Reduce total costs of VLE’s
· Increase user satisfaction
· Promote openness

Next to that the two top priorities of the Sakai foundation should be to ‘create the highest quality core software’ and ‘Seek to engage new members of the community’.Regarding the last point, there is in fact some debate about the adoption of Sakai. The question is whether it is desired to have ( a lot) more institutions new to Sakai at this moment and seeing the complexity of managing the already large community rise.
This discussion also relates to the type of institutions, e.g community colleges, corporations etc. that are moving into the direction of Sakai. Mike Zackrison, vice-president of marketing and strategy at rSmart also touched on the debate in his session. rSmart has done a survey investigating various types of institutions and their future plans with regard to (open source) VLE’s, and they found some interesting issues. Those who are interested should contact rSmart to get a copy of the survey results. What made the talk especially interesting is that there seem to be differences in views on open source across different types of institutions. For example the rSmart survey concluded that community colleges (in the U.S) see open source as risky and do not tend to be interested in Sakai. Well, we all now that in The Netherlands community colleges have the largest install base of Sakai-OSP in the Dutch educational system, using the hosted solution by Portfolio4u. That shows the need of more market investigations throughout different regions and sharing them with the community, because the Sakai Foundation is debating these issues! The general idea however about the adoption of Sakai is that an increase of institutions using Sakai would be the preferred development. And in the end that is no surprise to me.

Make me jealous!

Unfortunately I cannot attend the current Sakai conference. So my question is: is anyone taking pictures at the conference (and outside the conference)? Can I see them?

Thoughts on the Sakai future...

It is the time of the year again. No, I do not mean Christmas etc. I mean the Sakai Board Elections are underway.
Michael Korcuska has set up a space on Confluence, where current Board members and candidates have posted a vision for the future of Sakai (at least for 2008). Michael himself has also written out some interesting thoughts on this page. Absolutely worth the read, even I you don't have the privilege to vote.
One candidate, Michael Feldstein, uses his own weblog to communicate with us, the voters. He recently wrote an interesting analysis regarding the Sakai future:

Within every university I talk to these days, I find three factions with respect to instructional technology. How big or powerful each faction is and who is in it varies from place to place, but the factions are always the same.

Faction #1 ("give me something off-the-rack") is the biggest faction in most institutions, also in The Netherlands.

Exhausted after the pre-conference

Yesterday we (from left to right: Jaeques Koeman, Jan van den Berge, Wytze Koopal, Frank Benneker) delivered our pre-conference at the SURF Onderwijsdagen. Gerard Dummer was so kind to take a picture of us after the pre-conference. I must say that I was quite exhausted after the 3 hour session (can you see it?).

We will have enough participants!

A few weeks ago I put up an announcement that we would be doing a pre-conference workshop on Nov 13 (tomorrow!) at the SURF Onderwijsdagen (one of the largest conferences on elearning in The Netherlands with some 600 people in attendance). A little less than 20 people have signed up for the pre-conference workshop, which sounds like a reasonable amount to me.
So, today we are heavily preparing our workshop. The agenda (in Dutch) can be found online (a Google document).

What if... this was your last lecture?

This has been picked up already in the blogosphere and on news sites, here, in the New York Times, or here.... But anyway.
The concept of the 'last lecture' is meant for professors to really think about what they would like to tell in their last lecture. A few 'last lectures' already have been given. A really powerful concept, isn't it? Forget all the humbug and daily routines: you have just so little time to deliver your last lecture. It better be good!
Recently, professor Randy Pausch really gave his last lecture. This wasn't just an exercise for him, since he has pancreatic cancer and only has a few months left to live. Just take a look at the video for a few minutes: it is really impressive. The video is brought to us under a Creative Commons license ("The video and transcript will technically be under a "creative commons" license, which will be a legal way of saying that you may use them for non-commercial purposes, so long as you don't alter them, and you give attribution. Please bear with me; figuring out that legal stuff is secondary to my other priorities.")

What started out at the bar in Amsterdam as just an idea, seems to become something real...
What am I talking about?
I am talking about a great marketing opportunity to make ourselves and Sakai known, by doing some promotion at the Online Educa conference in Berlin, on Berlin (Germany), November 28 - 30, 2007. See http://www.online-educa.com/.
At this largest elearning conference in Europe there is a possibility that we can use the booth of the SURFfoundation and JISC (they have a combined booth) at the trade floor. If so, then we need a few (between 5 and 8) people that will be answering questions, show some stuff etc at the booth.
So, my main questions are:
1/ Who is going to the Online Educa conference?
2/ Who is willing to spend some hours in the booth to do some 'marketing' stuff?

Ofcourse, if we are going to do this, we will need to do some preparation (posters etc), but that should not be an issue.

Please respond ASAP, as we need to finalize our arrangements with SURFfoundation and JISC soon.

Visit to Rotterdam

Yesterday I paid a visit to Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). They invited me to give them a introduction to Sakai in 25 minutes. I talked to a group of about 20 people, that are considered to be the elearning experts of this university. The presentation (Google doc; Dutch) went quite well!
What striked me was that there was quite a bit of frustation within the group about Blackboard (their current VLE). It was called inflexible, hard to manage etc. There were also the questions about what opensource is about. For example the question how security and bugs are handled with these type of software communities. Well, as Chris already wrote yesterday: we are doing quite good.

Security releases of Sakai

Last friday two security releases of Sakai became available. Go to the release page for the latest info on this 2.4.1 release.
In the meantime the community is working hard for Sakai 2.5 to come out on November 12. Some news on this release:

• Open Source Portfolio will be promoted to the core of Sakai
• Abilities to delete unwanted stuff in Forum, Messages and Chat
• Some good stuff in Resources
• iCal subscription export service and import, available in Schedule (yeah!!)
  
• and much more....

Help NIET mee aan de SURFgroepen campagne

[this is in Dutch] SURFnet is wel erg druk om SURFgroepen te promoten.... Nu wordt er zelfs een oproep geplaatst om mee te helpen om SURFgroepen bekend te maken (bron). Ik zou de collega's in het land willen oproepen om NIET mee te doen aan deze campagne!
Wil je weten waarom ik deze oproep plaats? Omdat ik vind dat SURFnet hiermee nogal inbreuk maakt op wat er gaande is in onze instellingen, waar we net met veel moeite een Electronische Leeromgeving hebben geïntroduceerd.

Meeting in Amsterdam: meeting notes available

Yesterday we had a cosy meeting in Amsterdam. We came together in the Albert Einstein room. Sound a lot better than "0.10" or whatever. It inspired us to be creative and constructive at the same time. Check it out at our website:

I am very happy with one result from the meeting: other people, namely Jaeques, Jan and Frank stood up to assist me in creating our pre-conference "Everything you need to know about Sakai" for the next SURF Onderwijsdagen (only in Dutch). One of the keynote speakers at the Onderwijsdagen is Stephen Downes; don't miss it!

Agenda for Sep 19, 2007

Next week the Sakai Special Interest Group NL will meet in Amsterdam, as announced before. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. There is no obligation to register or whatever (although a little note is appreciated!).
We will discuss the plans for the coming year (the current members of the Sakai SIG NL already received a draft document concering our plans), as well as current developments within our institutions. Especially the Saxion University and the University of Amsterdam (the host for this meeting) will fill us in on their current projects.
Furthermore I surely want to discuss how we will create a great pre-conference workshop at the largest elearning fair in The Netherlands for Higher Ed, the SURF Onderwijsdagen. This pre-conference workshop will take place on November 13. Mark your agenda's!
All details on the agenda for next week are, as always, available online (in Dutch). If you cannot attend our meeting, please let me know.

Several weeks ago we mentioned that our final report of our Sakai pilots was available. Today our university newspaper features an article where you can read (in Dutch) the decisions that have been made by our board, with some comments by my colleague Stanley Portier.
Our board has urged us to put some serious effort in evaluating the MS Sharepoint 2007 product. This should be our sole focus for the coming months.
The fact that very few institutions in The Netherlands are investigating Sakai, is an important factor in the decision of our board to steer in the direction of Sharepoint (for which there seems to be more interest within our sector).
Final decisions will made early in 2008. We will keep you posted.

Summer vacation is now officially over here in The Netherlands. At our campus the so-called introduction period has started (see photo) for our new students. Next week, classes will start.
The first meeting of the Sakai SIG NL has also been planned, in close cooperation with Jaeques Koeman (University of Amsterdam). We will meet, at the University of Amsterdam, on Sept 19. Details about location and time: 10:00 - 14:00, room T1.10 (ground floor), Instituut voor Interdisciplinaire Studies, Sarphatistraat 104, 1018 GV Amsterdam , click for location on Google map .
Details about the final programme will be communicated later, but please block this date in your calender. And if you would like to be a presenter at this meeting, please make yourself known!

Get your proposals ready!

The next Sakai conference is already in the making (did you notice that the domain is "sakai.educonference.com"?). I have heard about some great names as possible keynote speakers (Michael tells something about it).
But before i lose you: this post is about us, you and me. We can submit proposals and the deadline is September 15, 2007.
Shall we use the tag "sakainewportbeach07" for all news regarding this upcoming conference in Newport Beach?

Fedora Commons gets funding!

Great news that I recently heard about Fedora. They have been awarded a $4.9M Grant to Develop Open-Source Software for Building Collaborative Information Communities. From the press release:
"Fedora Commons today announced the award of a four year, $4.9M grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to develop the organizational and technical frameworks necessary to effect revolutionary change in how scientists, scholars, museums, libraries, and educators collaborate to produce, share, and preserve their digital intellectual creations. Fedora Commons is a new non-profit organization that will continue the mission of the Fedora Project, the successful open-source software collaboration between Cornell University and the University of Virginia."
Who is Gordon Moore you would ask? He was was one of the founders of Intel, and is known for "Moore's Law". Wikipedia tells you what this law is about, in case you didn't know.

Comparing apples and oranges

If you are a member of del.icio.us you can a create a so-called 'subscription'. This means that you can pinch in some tag(s) and then get access to all the links of all the users of del.icio.us that have used that same tag(s) in their collection of links.
Through my subcription to the tag 'sakai' I found a very nice article. It is called Is Open Source Right for You?. The article clearly identifies some important factors in considering open source, and Sakai for that matter: "So what makes an organization a good candidate for open source? And is open source mature enough yet to be considered a viable alternative to commercial learning management systems, particularly for use in corporate environments?

Here's a look at several factors any organization contemplating open source should put on its "must list" to consider."
The article make an important distinction between a course management system (CMS) and a Learning Management System (LMS). I always sort of tried not to think of this distinction, but it is indeed important to have a good understanding of the differences. For one: a LMS has clear administrative functions that a typical CMS doesn't have. An LMS is therefore mostly used in a corporate environment, in contrast to a CMS, that is typically used in Higher Ed (or education in general).

Time to start writing!!!

Through the wonders of Bloglines, I came across (again!) the weblog by Scott Wilson. He pointed me to the JOLT - Journal of Online Learning and Teaching. This is a great resource! I highly recommend it. And then I read this:
"The June 2008 issue of JOLT will be a special issue, centered on the topic of next generation learning/course management systems (L/CMS). (..) new technologies present diverse ideas and opportunities for engaged e-learning (..)."
Themes that are mentioned for this special issue are (e.g.) "Open source vs commercial environments" or "Best practices in teaching within the L/CMS".
Time to get writing! The proposal deadline is Feb 29, 2008.
The Sakai community should have at least one feature article in this special issue, shouldn't we?

New institution using Sakai

Sometimes you are confronted with a pleasant surprise. This time it came to me trough my email. I was asked to comment on a choice between Sakai and Moodle as possible course management system for Academia Vitae. I had never heard of this educational institution before in my life. And to make it worse: they are located in Deventer, which is quite close to my hometown.
Academia Vitae is a privately-funded institution that provides educational programmes for young professionals and more experienced professionals. They have taken the model of a classic university and liberal arts and sciences. They offer several broad programmes to the students. Their ICT strategy is geared towards opensource, therefore their shortlist contained Sakai and Moodle. Not even before I properly had responded to their questions in their first email, I received a second email that they had chosen Sakai. One of the reasons mentioned in favor of Sakai, is the educational model of Moodle that doesn't really fit the philosophy of Academia Vitae.
Academia Vitae will be working with Edia (the company that brought us Sakai on a stick) in implementing Sakai.

Standards: a lot of useful information from JISC!

The JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), based in the UK, has a great Standards Catalogue. The information has been collated by UKOLN (Brian Kelly). This kind of resource is, for me, very valuable. Otherwise I would have been surfing the net endlessly.
The information is not restricted to purely 'open' standards, which (at this moment in time, that is) is understandable. The information is also not restricted to e-learning standards, but also standards in the field of text editing or images. Sometimes you need to be a little pragmatic. All standards are documented in the same way (based on a template). What is very nice that there are headings like "Risk Asessment" and "Take-up Elsewhere" for every entry. The approach of JISC with regard to standards is also explained.
I found a wiki, which is the working area, where 'everyone' can edit. And there is a website, that holds more permanent (and pertinent?) information. Go find out for yourself what you think!
Some standards that you will find explained:

1. Binary text documents, such as DOC, RTF, ODF, or PDF
2. Image standards: for example SVG, TIFF or PNG
3. Examples of multimedia standards: ACC, MP3, ASF
4. Metadata: DIDL, RDF, RSS
5. E-learning standards: Learning Design, Content Packaging, IMS Enterprise, QTI

In our last meeting, on July 4, we discussed improvements we could make to the operations of the Sakai SIG NL. One of the suggestions was that we should make use of locations other than the SURFfoundation offices. Also it was suggested that, when having a meeting at a certain location, the location 'owner' would be responsible for the organisation of the meeting (e.g. inviting speakers, organise lunch etc). This also fits nicely with what we have dubbed 'distributed leadership'.
The first meeting of the next year, meeting 2.1, will most possibly be held at the University of Amsterdam. But also Saxion Hogescholen, Portfolio4U and A New Spring have offered to host a meeting in the coming year. Stay tuned for exact dates.

Final report in English (University of Twente)

The project team at the University of Twente has recently finished their pilot project Campus Blend using Sakai (CBUS in short). In this project Sakai was evaluated on different aspects. Evaluation was done on technical aspects, educational and functional aspects as well as community aspects.
Extensive results and conclusion on the aforementioned aspects are all to be found in the final report, that has been translated into English for everyone to read. Go to http://www.utwente.nl/elo, where you can download your (electronic) copy of the report.

{Dutch} Waarom geen opensource in het Hoger Onderwijs?

This post will be mostly in Dutch...
Ruben van Wendel de Joode (TU Delft) reflects on some recent research that concludes that not even one institution for Higher Education in The Netherlands uses an opensource product in when it comes to a VLE or CMS.
Ruben heeft het onderzoek van de Open Universiteit gelezen dat in het kader van het e-Learning research programma van SURFfoundation onlangs is verschenen. Hij begint zijn review als volgt:
"Met groeiende belangstelling en verbazing heb ik zojuist op een druilerige zondagavond het rapport gelezen over een door SURF foundation gefinancierd onderzoek naar de adoptie van open source elektronische leeromgevingen in het hoger onderwijs. In de inleiding, die begint op pagina 7, staat voor mij de meest essentiële uitkomst van het hele onderzoek. Van de 33 hoger onderwijsinstellingen die de enquête hebben ingevuld, maakt er niet één gebruik van open source in de elektronische leeromgeving (elo). Een opmerkelijke uitkomst."
