10de Sakai conferentie in Boston is onderweg

In Boston is vandaag de 10e Sakai conferentie van start gegaan. Meer dan 500 deelnemers treffen elkaar aan de oostkust van de VS om ervaringen & best pratices te delen. Een belangrijk thema deze conferentie is Sakai 3, de volgende en revolutionaire fase in de Sakai community en software.

Alan Berg (Universiteit van Amsterdam) heeft samen met Michael Korcuska (executive director Sakai Foundation) de eerste officiële Sakai handleiding geschreven. Dit boek gaat in op de vele mogelijkheden die Sakai omgeving biedt. Michael en Alan worden bijgestaan door ruim 40 co-auteurs en leden van de Sakai community die vanuit diverse perspectieven beschrijven hoe sakai geïmplementeerd en gebruikt wordt bij onderwijsinstellingen over de gehele wereld.

Vandaag kun je de eerste zogenaamde Sakai Executive Brief lezen. Michael Korcuska heeft deze gepubliceerd op zijn weblog. De Sakai Executive Brief is bedoeld voor diegenen die snel een overzicht willen hebben van waar de wereldwijde Sakai community mee bezig is. Je kunt het zien als een samenvatting van de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen in de afgelopen maanden en ook een vooruitblik op de komende maanden. Last week the Sakai Foundation distributed (it went to Sakai Foundation member reps initially) the first installment of a Sakai Executive Brief that we plan to publish every 6 months. It is focused on providing organizational managers and executives with a brief overview of what has been and what will be happening in Sakai. Those who already follow Sakai closely won’t find a lot new in here but, even Sakai insiders may find it useful for communicating with stakeholders on campus.

UvA communities revisited, a Sakai collaboration environment

'Communities (of practice) are everywhere and people generally participate in a number of them', according to Etienne Wenger (http://www.ewenger.com/).

The UvA communities (University of Amsterdam) aims to place this important observation in the context of the 21st century University, by creating a ubiquitous community platform that is able to stage a number of different communities and users, including individuals from outside university. Within one system, users can become a member of one or more communities, and communities may be formed around a number of topics, ranging from a general field of studies to an ad hoc problem area.

Unlike most information systems in educational organizations, UvA communities (http://www.communities.uva.nl/)is open to the public and is free to use. It's very purpose is to allow people from outside the university organization to connect within the realm of the university and to give insiders means to easily connect outside university, all having access to the same set of tools and services, which are extensible with tailor-made functionality. People from many different cultural and scientific backgrounds collaborate on a variety of topics and take on multiple roles in multiple communities.

UvA Communities started as a pilot project in the autumn of 2006 at the institute of interdisciplinary studies. Together with a small company Edia ,the Sakai developing partner of the UvA, the Informatiseringcentrum is hosting and developing the community environment. Two years later (dec. 2008) the system has grown into a collaboration environment for broad range of groups within the university. Over 300 sites and several thousands users are using UvA communities on a regular bases.

UvA communities hosts some very interesting use cases.

Bezoek Dr. Chuck aan Vrije Universiteit

Toen ik Chuck in januari mailde met de vraag of hij nog op de hoogte was van onderwijsontwikkelingen op basis van de Google App Engine antwoordde dat hij dat hij bezig was met Cloudsocial (http://www.cloudsocial.org/). Bovendien ging hij binnenkort toch naar Zuid-Afrika (?) en moest toch overstappen via Schiphol. Hij was gaarne bereid om ons de Vu een bezoek te brengen. Deze gelegenheid hebben we met beide handen aangegrepen. Vrijdag 20 feb heeft hij ons bezocht. Naast CloudSocial hebben we het natuurlijk ook over Sakai gehad. Wat vooral goed viel bij mijn collegae was de presentatie van Sakai 3. Het ziet er natuurlijk wel goed uit.
Zoals je wellicht weet zitten we bij de VU in een evaluatieproject van Blackboard en kijken ook naar mogelijke alternatieven.
Sakai was bij de VU al een systeem waar serieus naar werd gekeken en is mede door het bezoek en presentatie van Chuck alleen maar interessanter geworden. Wij kijken dan ook met veel interesse uit naar Cambridge en Georgia Tech die van de zomer met Sakai 3 gaan starten.

Deze conferentie zal zich met name richten op praktische implementatie vragen en gebruikersvragen voor instellingen die met Sakai werken. Voor de ontwikkelaars is er een programmerscafe georganiseerd op maandag 4 mei.

Stockholm University is proud to invite you to the 2nd European Sakai Conference, to be held in Stockholm May 5‐6 2009. On May 4th there is also a Programmer’s café for developers that are new to Sakai.

The main focus will be at different aspects of implementation, with newcomers interested in Sakai, head of IT departments, developers and university teachers especially in mind.

The European Bologna process will serve as one base for discussions, localization of Sakai from a developer’s perspective another. Right now we see a couple of parallel tracks before us, like introduction to Sakai, implementation as well as a technical track for developers.

The location of the conference is Stockholm University main campus Frescati. We’ll start the main conference at lunchtime on May 5th, with a social event in the evening. We then continue the whole day of May 6th 2009.

The day before, on Monday May 4th, there is a workshop, a Programmer’s Café, where developers new to Sakai will get an introduction to programming Sakai, with exercises, modifications, localisation, etc. There is also a possibility to continue this workshop in the morning on Tuesday May 5th, before the actual conference starts.

Nieuwe leden van bestuur Sakai Foundation

Het is al een tijdje geleden, maar er zijn twee nieuwe leden in het bestuur gekozen van de Sakai Foundation. John Norman is herbenoemd en Stephen Marquard is nieuw in het bestuur. Zie het bericht Sakai Board Election Results « Michael Korcuska Sakai Blog

I’m pleased to announce that John Norman (Cambridge) will be continuing as a Sakai Foundation Board member and Stephen Marquard (Cape Town) will be joining the Sakai Foundation Board of Directors.

This year’s slate of candidates was impressively accomplished and diverse–a real testament to the vibrancy of the Sakai community. I want to thank all of those who were willing to serve the Sakai community and in congratulating John and Stephen. The transition officially occurs with the first board meeting in 2009, currently scheduled for January 15th.

Sakai 3.0 is de visie van de Community op de persoonlijke leer- en samenwerkingsomgeving in combinatie met de drijvende kracht achter web 2.0: het vormen van netwerken. In dit document roept Michael iedereen op om deel te nemen aan de toekomst van Sakai.

Stockholm University is proud to invite the Sakai community to the 2nd European Sakai Conference, to be held in Stockholm, May 5-6 2009.

The main focus will be on different aspects of implementation, with sessions aimed at newcomers interested in Sakai, heads of IT departments, developers and teachers.

Op 10 december 2008 hebben we onze volgende bijeenkomst van de Sakai NL gebruikersgroep. Deze zullen we zeer waarschijnlijk gaan houden in Utrecht, bij SURF Foundation (gemakkelijk te voet bereikbaar vanaf Utrecht CS). De bijeenkomst zal worden gehouden in de middag, van 13-16 uur. Mocht je een interessant verhaal te vertellen over Sakai, horen we dat graag.

"Sakai will be the 'Eclipse For Education" (source: IBM)

Een discussie tijdens de 10de SURF Onderwijsdagen bracht de vraag naar boven wat de relatie is tussen IBM en Sakai. Voor een open source ontwikkeling is het interessant als belangrijke spelers (IBM) deze ontwikkelingen steunen. Michael Korcuska schreef op 24 oktober in zijn blog over Sakai en IBM op de laatste Educause conferentie. Ik was niet alleen nieuwsgierig naar wat de Sakai community over hun relatie met IBM schrijft maar juist ook hoe IBM kijkt naar Sakai. In een presentatie van Kevin Turner, IBM Public Sector Education Industry van 9 april van dit jaar staan een aantal duidelijke aanknopingspunten en IBM maakt helder waarom zij Sakai een belangrijke ontwikkeling vinden en daar ook hun steentje aan bij gaan dragen. De uitspraak "Sakai will be the 'Eclipse For Education" (source: IBM) is gedurft en voor mij een reden om even een korte post te wijden aan IBM en Sakai.

"The Official Sakai Handbook" is under development

I'm extremely pleased to announce that first Sakai book (tentatively untitled "The Official Sakai Handbook") is under development. It will be published next year by John Wiley & Sons (a Sakai Foundation partner institution). The book is the brainchild of Alan Berg, 2008-2009 Sakai Fellow from the University of Amsterdam. I will be a co-author. All royalties from the book will go to the Sakai Foundation. We are working with Wiley to allow educational institutions to use portions of the book without paying royalties. They have been very receptive although specific language is still to be finalized.

Although Alan and I will be listed as authors on the book we are really counting on contributions from the community for much of the content. He and I will be reaching out to the community in the coming weeks and months to solicit content that we can incorporate. We appreciate your help with this exciting development.

I'd like to thank Carol Long from Wiley for her assistance during the proposal development and contracting phase. And, of course, a special thanks to Alan Berg for being the engine behind this effort!

Sakai op Onderwijsdagen 2008

Vorig jaar hadden we een succesvolle pre-conferentie (zie presentaties) op de SURF Onderwijsdagen. Deze keer, op de SURF Onderwijsdagen 2008, doen we het anders. Je kunt ons (Wytze Koopal, Jaeques Koeman en Frank Benneker) ontmoeten bij de Innovatietafels (op de informatiemarkt) op woensdag 12 november rond lunchtijd, vanaf 12.30 uur. Je kunt hier in een informele setting met ons van gedachten wisselen. Aanmelden is niet nodig.... wij zullen er zijn.

Edia launches Sakai Scorm demo server

Being able to play Scorm content in Sakai is a commonly heard requirement from (potential) Sakai users. Although there have been several efforts to develop a working Scorm player for Sakai, there is still no stable player available as of today.
A team from UC Davis is now developing a SCORM 2004 player for Sakai 2.5. We are strong supporters of this initiative and we decided to help find an fix some issues to get it to work on Sakai 2.5.
At this point we want to announce that we launched a demo server for the SCORM player: http://scormplayer.edia.nl

We would like to to invite people interested in Sakai and Scorm to test their Scorm content packages and if applicable, report issues.

Sakai op Holland Open conferentie

Op 18 september gaf Jaeques Koeman een presentatie over Sakai. De presentatie geeft een introductie Sakai en voorbeelden vanuit de use case van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Daarnaast wordt de Nederlandse community geintroduceerd en worden er enkele ontwikkelingen geschetst.

Paris, Hull and Amsterdam collaborating on Sakai and Uportal

Last week several developers from the University of Hull, l'université Pierre et Marie Curie and the University of Amsterdam met in Amsterdam. We discussed our present and future plans with Sakai and Uportal and shared experiences and practices. During the two day meeting several ideas on possible collaboration were discussed. We decided to work together on some small projects on extending Uportal functionality and Uportal - Sakai integration. If we succeed in making these little projects a success it could be the start of something really nice. We hope to show the Uportal and Sakai community the progress of this collaboration in progress in next year conferences.

Sakai op Educause (Orlando)

Op de komende Educause conferentie in Orlando zijn er veel sessies en evenementen die gerelateerd zijn aan Sakai en open source in het algemeen. Zoals altijd gaat er een grote groep Nederlanders naar de Educause conferentie via de zogenaamde Edutrip, die altijd zeer zorgvuldig georganiseerd wordt door SURFfoundation.
Voor die mensen is dit overzicht wellicht handig om af te drukken en mee te nemen.

Sakai 2.5.3 is beschikbaar

Vorige week is heeft de nieuwste versie van Sakai, Sakai 2.5.3 het licht gezien. Op de downloadpagina van Sakai is een overzicht van alle verschillende downloads te vinden. Een overzicht van de wijzigingen in deze release wordt op de Sakai wiki beschreven.

De 2.5 releases van Sakai zijn opgedragen aan Marc Brierley. Marc was één van actieve gangmakers in de Sakai community en is begin dit jaar plotseling overleden.

Stoas gebruikt Sakai voor eigen bedrijfsvoering

Stoas Learning heeft onlangs een Sakai installatie in gebruik genomen ter ondersteuning van de eigen communicatieprocessen. De basisinrichting werd gedaan door Leen van Kaam. Met name bij de consultants - die veelal buiten de deur zijn - bestond de behoefte aan een ruimte waar men informatie met elkaar kan delen en waar men op een laagdrempelige manier kan communiceren. Deze zogenaamde Share omgeving is vooralsnog gericht op de communicatie binnen het team consultants. Op termijn wordt eraan gedacht om specifieke projectsites in te richten, waar de de klant eventueel ook toegang toe krijgt. Op deze wijze hopen we dat de Sakai omgeving straks ook zal bijdragen aan de externe communicatie.

Donderdag 18 september (morgen) zal Jaeques Koeman (Edia) op de Holland Open Conferentie (website: http://www.hosc.nl/) een sessie verzorgen over Sakai. Op de conferentie zijn naast de sessie over Sakai sessies over Moodle en ook gebruik van openstandaarden en open source in het Onderwijs. Er is een specifiek track beide dagen over "Open Educatie".

Vernieuwde Sakai website online

www.sakaiproject.org, de website van de Sakai Foundation is vernieuwd. Een nieuwe vormgeving en veel leuker een nieuwe software omgeving waarin de website is gebouwd.
Geen willekeurig cms maar Sakai als motor onder de eigen website.
